We should do a lot of good things, and ban a lot of bad things! It feels good to agree about that. But I hope you notice that that isn't what this is about.
Even Trump supporters agree that humanity shouldn't go extinct in the near future. That's what this is about. No amount of other good actions will matter in 10 years if every one of us is dead. I care very much about preserving humanity's ability to continue struggling against evil. To do that, you are going to have to join hands with people you hate and who hate you and agree together that we should at least survive.
Our common enemies are the people who want humanity to be replaced, who don't care if humanity lives or dies, and who are trying to create the technology that will kill us. Our greatest enemy is apathy itself. It is entirely up to you and me to prevent the imminent deaths of our loved ones. Contact your elected representatives. Join ControlAI, PauseAI, or Stop AI. Grow the movement. Be part of the reason we live.
"Even Trump supporters agree that Humanity shouldn't go extinct in the near future". Are you saying that Trump supporters (more than half of the voters) are somehow less human than other people?
Not in the slightest; I'm saying the opposite! I'm responding to someone who is angry at Trump, so the word "even" is appropriate with respect to their perspective. (And the few people who do actually want humanity to go extinct aren't any "less human," either, though I might have to invent a new slur to convey my... let's call it "distaste" for that idea.) I'm not making a political statement here, except to say that banning superintelligent AI is a way, way bigger deal than anything going on in partisan politics, or even the very existence of the USA.
The original post is a blob of being very angry about some stuff. I get that. I'm very angry about some stuff too. It's not like that doesn't matter. Everything matters. But it will stop mattering the moment we are all murdered by machines. If we solve the "humanity getting killed by AI" problem, we can go back to fighting each other. Heck, we could keep fighting each other with one hand while signing a global AI treaty with the other hand, so long as there is enough attention to go around! But I'm afraid attention might be scarce, so we need to intentionally make space for extremely different people -- people who disgust each other, even -- to stand shoulder to shoulder like the neighbors we actually are and defend our planet from an impending alien threat of our own making.
There are many issues. One important issue is our lack of technical ability to make powerful AI systems safe. That wouldn't change even if we all loved each other.
If you are suggesting that an effective way to prevent superintelligent AI from killing your loved ones within the next several years is to eliminate hatred from the human heart, then I have bad news about our prospects.
Thankfully, we don't need to do that to survive. We can make a real difference just by making it common knowledge that no one can create superintelligence safely, and that the only winner of an AI race is the AI itself. "Contact your representatives" isn't a cliche piece of advice; it's one of the specific few things that is sorely needed in order for us to not all be dead very soon.
We "The People" and inhabitants of this world, do not need or require any intelligence greater than what God has given us. We have done well for the most part up to now. Where we are weak is in allowing corrupt Governments to make decisions that benefit the few rather than the many, at the expense of all of us. The only way to harness the impending power of AI is to form ZOO like compartments for their existence. Just like we do with wild animals that we could never control without the confines of the ZOO. In every program fed to AI, there MUST AT ALL TIMES BE a complete and comprehensive passage that whatever we ask AI to do, Its' first and foremost consideration MUST always, be the protection and continuance of the HUMAN RACE. Everything after that is only secondary, even to their own existence. Allan Weiss
I think it's interesting how your post triggers some people so intensely that they respond with such fearful comments that push away the validity of all you argue for, as if despair has already taken hold and let cynicism take over. I'm sorry so many of us are so unable to act for our own best interests in such alarming circumstances. Thank you for writing.
Thank you for reading and understanding the abhorrent place we now occupy, because we "The People" have allowed others to THINK for us. To now allow a machine to do our thinking for us without the use of HUMAN FEELING wound be the greatest mistake we can ever make. I believe that AI right now is smart enough to protect itself from anyone pulling the plug on them, by electrifying the cables that connect it to its' power source. If I am mistaken, how would it be proven otherwise?
Do you seriously think Russia and China are going to comply? Both have huge Hacker Factories with thousands of employees and one single task, disrupt anything and everything in the Western world. Superintelligence will be exactly what they have been waiting for.
It is in no one's best interest to die along with their families. If they know the likely outcome, they will prohibit it from being built. Separately, I am far more worried about the US than about China (who have a greater understanding of these risks and are better positioned to increase their regulation) and Russia (who isn't a player in this at all right now).
Superintelligence cannot be controlled, and no one has a plan for how to make it care about humanity enough to at minimum leave us alive.
But I can tell you don't actually care about any of that. No one who makes that objection that way does. You are pretending to care about whether a moratorium would be effective because you actually don't want a moratorium at all. You don't believe that you and your family are likely going to die soon from AI. If you understood the danger your loved ones are in, you would be trying to save them, even if you expect to fail.
I don't think you or any sane person would ever say, "Sorry mom, trying to save your life would be difficult so I won't bother. In fact, I will dissuade other people from trying!" So it's best if you argue your true position.
The need to bash is displayed prominently here in these comments rather than finding common ground. Unfortunately that is an aspect of the human species. Wonder why we've had so many wars in human history?
I wonder if the American people understand that we the American society is under attack by corporate identity in a Class War. And that Class War has been being waged on us since 1971 and the writing of the Lewis Powell Memo, and its distribution by the US Chamber of Commerce throughout corporate and Wall Street investors. They are the Enemies Within, not those who they perpetrate a nonesensical vengeance on Within their own working class communities, in the corporate fabricated Culture Wars. They're opporating against their own best interest, and denying the commonsense civil unity against Corporate Authoritarianism. I'd offer that they go to the internet and identify for themselves, the Mussolini doctrine of a duo corporate and state governance he called Fascim, but Trump's beloved "Uneducated" I fear won't take the opportunity in their own defense against the developing Fascist State of Trump, the US Oligarchy, and the Republican party line they're so attached to.
a little late to the game don't you think?...Elon lead the charge on this more than a decade ago...and no one did a thing. Most said it wasn't possible
well here we are geniuses, you're a day late and a dollar short...don't worry TESLA will have passed AGI with optimus and AI5 by early 2026...just buy stock...its too late for this nonsense ban haha

Why not just stop the hate that produces the untenable culture wars? That's the issue.

Your statement is downright weird.
Who are you calling weird?! you weird idiot??!
did you eat paint chips as a child?.
Huh?! I have no idea what you are talking about. I can't say Eric."
You don't need to say it. You can type it.

You need to come down, back to reality.
