I am getting along just fine without A.I . I don't think we should be rushing headlong into it like we did with television and the internet look at how they have ruined our society . Most of the time you can't even fix the software on your own phone because the idiots are created the software didn't have a logical plan .
I guess it can't be "uninvented",but considering the way we abandon really great ideas on a whim... it seems to me this one could be die a quick death. I suspect (to put it mildly) we will ALL pay for its existence sooner than later!!!!!
If you're in the US, note that anything you send to your 'elected officials ', will not be read by them, just their staff. Who will then send out a form letter filled with self congratulatory BS.
When just 5 or 10 people send messages on the same topic to their Representative or Senator, their staffers make sure that the congressperson hears about it. They care, because they care about getting reelected, and AI danger is a very bipartisan issue!
Please don't discourage people from taking one of the few actions that is actually helpful. Very few people regularly contact their elected officials about AI danger. If everyone who ever told me it's hopeless had simply called their Representative instead, we might already have a global AI treaty by now.

Now, petitions. They work far better. Phone calls are very difficult to ignore. Peaceful protests. Citizens are getting a lot more done lately on their own. We have power.
Emails count toward the total pressure on a rep in ways that are not legible to the sender. You just have to ignore the barely-relevant form responses and keep reaching out. You're right, though, that calls are more valuable, handwritten letters and cards even more so, and protests even more than that. But they are valuable precisely because they are harder!
I would rank signing a petition slightly below the level of impact of an email (especially because you can only do it once), but it is still an excellent first step because of its collective statement.
The biggest thing is to do something rather than nothing, and the next biggest thing is to distribute your actions across whatever has the best ROI in your context!
