Probably because it won't matter what his company does if someone else goes there, anyway. I can see his line of thinking that it's important that a supposed "good guy" gets there before the supposed "bad guys" do, not that I know what he could do to prevent the other guys getting there eventually, anyway. Even if everyone promised not to go there, would a bad actor/liar not go there surreptitiously? Do you think that it would stop Russia or China or Musk or Thiel? It's a lot like the acquisition of nuclear weapons in its ramifications.
I understand that line of thinking... but as you said, just because they said that they wouldn't, doesn't mean they won't. The only way to effectively stop it, is to full-on STOP building the technology. To realize the Harm it is already causing, and the devastation it Will cause and just Outlaw it until we have Proper guardrails around Every aspect of the technology and its use.
I agree 100 percent, I think there are dangers in introducing AI into society to quickly it could much harm and it is already to humans when humans interact with AI on a personal level, humans in certain situations use AI as a friend and it ruins their physiology of interaction with others humans.

I vote against Super AI. We have all seen the TV shows and movies. All that Super AI would do is copy those scenarios once it saw them.
