This was completely foreseeable. In fact over 10 years ago a TV show, Person of Interest, had a complete story line about Samaritan (get the irony) a super computer that overcame the benevolent AI that the protagonists were using to save lives. Cameras everywhere could identify anyone it wanted to destroy. It did not end well, unlike most TV programs. Life imitating art--sorry to say.
Obviously either is preferable to the current situation. Once we get a global ban/pause/stop/moratorium, I think it should be up to we the people of the world to decide whether to build superintelligence if we ever find a way to do so safely.
It shouldn't be the decision of a few billionaires to risk all of our lives, and it shouldn't be their decision to build new gods, either.
It is wild to think that such a small fraction of research goes toward safety while we are basically building a black box that we can't fully see inside of yet.
Question remains are we going to get Data or Lore? I stopped watching Star Trek when Data stabbed counselor Troy and I'll be very happy with my cabin, garden, and wood stove. Thank you.

Just to clarify when you say “ban super intelligence” do mean a full ban or a temporary ban until alignment can be and is solved?

I am more in favor of a pause until alignment is solved! I would like to know what the authors of the article (Tolga Bilge and Andrea Miotti think!
